Controls Engineer
Location: Walsall, West Midlands
Salary : 55-60k Circa

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to join the PP Control & Automation team, supporting the design, development, and optimisation of industrial control systems across production and process environments.

The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering automation and control solutions, improving plant performance, supporting commissioning activities, and ensuring systems operate safely and efficiently. This role requires strong technical expertise in PLCs, SCADA, instrumentation, and process automation, with the ability to work collaboratively across engineering, operations, and maintenance teams.

Essential Skills & Experience
• Proven experience as a Controls Engineer within industrial, manufacturing, or process environments
• Strong hands-on experience with PLC programming (e.g. Siemens, Allen Bradley, Schneider)
• Experience with SCADA / HMI systems such as WinCC, Wonderware, or FactoryTalk
• Knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as:
• Profibus
• Profinet
• Modbus
• Ethernet/IP
• Experience with instrumentation and process control systems
• Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting skills in automation environments
• Experience supporting commissioning and start-up activities
• Ability to read and interpret electrical/control drawings and P&IDs
• Knowledge of industrial safety standards and engineering best practices
• Excellent problem-solving and communication skills
Desirable Skills
• Experience in process plant, manufacturing, or utilities environments
• Familiarity with DCS systems
• Knowledge of functional safety and SIL-rated systems
• Experience with drives, motors, and variable speed control
• Understanding of Industry 4.0, data acquisition, and digital automation solutions
• Experience managing automation projects from design through implementation
Qualifications
Degree or HNC/HND in:
• Control Engineering
• Electrical Engineering
• Automation Engineering
• Instrumentation Engineering
• Relevant vendor certifications (Siemens / Rockwell / Schneider) advantageous
